The 2016 Mazda MX-5 has a heavy burden on its shoulders, living up to the reputation earned by the previous three generations of Mazda sports roadsters. But fortunately, its lightweight construction looks to be standing it in good stead-especially in the gas mileage department.

Light makes for fun, but it can also enhance gas mileage, of course, and in the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, the latter, at least, comes down to hard data: 27 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined when fitted with the standard six-speed manual transmission.

The optional six-speed automatic boosts mileage a touch to 27/36/30 mpg city/highway/combined.

Those are very nearly econobox figures (non-hybrid, anyway) from a car that's built for fun, handling, and a sense of speed. In other words, it's a pretty impressive balance.

It's also about 25 percent better than the outgoing third-generation MX-5's gas mileage.

We?ll have to wait until we can get our butts in the seat of the MX-5 to give a verdict on its fun factor, but with a striking new design, great numbers on paper, and Mazda's proven ability to tune fun into a two-seat roadster, our hopes are high-just like the gas mileage.
